• Why is CIRHU an essential project for Auroville?

 

What has been the outcome of almost 60 years since Auroville’s inauguration? 

It's easy to measure population numbers, land bought, and infrastructure built. But Auroville’s real “outcome” relates not to these factors, but to the work to realise human unity. This is not something that can be measured using standard models, but needs to be made visible by gathering the individual experiences of Aurovillians over the years, by putting attention to the inner work and the collective processes that are and have been at the core of Auroville. Today we need to make every effort to make the true outcomes visible, to share them within the Auroville community and with the world. CIRHU’s role is to facilitate and share this research to guide Auroville’s development, and connect the world with Auroville as a project in human unity for humanity. 

 

• Why CIRHU now?

 

After a long process driven by different individuals over the years, the CIRHU project was officially approved by the GB in August 2023, (minutes published in 2024). On 04 February 2025, CIRHU was finally registered as an Auroville City Service Unit with the recognition to begin the practical manifestation towards its full scope for Auroville and the World.

 

• Why is CIRHU a missing piece in Auroville today?

 

Much of the work undertaken in Auroville exists in initiatives that are not actively connected with each other, CIRHU’s role is to bring together various initiatives within Auroville by individuals and across different sectors, making work pioneering, credible, visible, and accessible. • How is this Citizen Science initiative connected to CIRHU?

 

Citizen Science Online Studies is an online tool created by CIRHU to begin to establish a research culture and bring forth the experiences of Aurovilians around areas that are at the core of our lives here. Citizen science offers a research method where, as an individual, I can take part in forming what will be studied, and what questions will be asked. It is a method that places research with the people and for the people. The Citizen Science Online is an initiative of CIRHU to begin the collective work of gathering the lived experiences of Aurovillians.

 

• Who is behind this initiative?

 

Citizen Science Studies is an initiative of CIRHU to open an inclusive, collaborative online space, allowing all Aurovilians to become active co-creators of knowledge. 

 

The Citizen Science Online Studies is part of a larger Research and Development work to make CIRHU fully operational through an Online Realm - facilitated by members of CIRHU (Maya- PhD scholar and Ishay- Digital Creative Director), together with The Auroville Research Platform Team (Suryamayi - PhD and Anshul - PhD scholar), and a growing team of Aurovilian professionals, (Divya  - M.A.)  in the fields of research / higher education / development / communication.

• How is this different from a survey?

 

A traditional survey asks static questions to capture a point-in-time snapshot, ending once final data is gathered. In contrast, this initiative tracks the lived experiences of residents over time by remaining open to responses perpetually. Every 3 months, a report is published summarising the responses of that particular period and synthesising the outcome with previous reports and responses. This will help  to observe cause-and-effect patterns within the ongoing Auroville experiment.

 

Also, Aurovilians can bring forward their own topics and questions, while outcomes are transparently shared back with the community. • Why should I participate?

 

You should participate because only through active participation can research data be collected to show the true experiences of the Auroville community. Beyond contributing to collective research, taking part offers a valuable moment for personal introspection and self-reflection - a chance to check in with yourself and stay attuned to Auroville’s raison d'être. Choosing to be part of Auroville means actively challenging the norms of outside society in our daily lives, choices, actions, attitudes, and values, and this exercise serves as an intentional pause to consciously reject those external patterns from quietly seeping back in.

 

The more participants who share their voice, the more accurately the data will represent the living reality of the Auroville experiment. Only when enough Aurovilians engage can this collective voice actively inform development, identifying genuine community needs while remaining grounded in Auroville’s foundational aims. Ultimately, the outcomes of these Citizen Science Online Studies create a shared foundation to highlight important topics for deeper research that can help guide Auroville’s evolution.

• Is my participation confidential? 

 

When you participate in a Citizen Science Study your email is not saved or linked to your response. Your response received in the google forms is set not to save emails, is completely anonymous and your identity and data is fully protected so your sharing can not be linked back to you.

• Who analyzes the information, and how can participants be sure the outcomes remain unskewed rather than subject to individual bias?

​

To ensure precision and contextual integrity, our team consists of Aurovilian professionals (comprising PhDs, PhD scholars, and Master’s degree holders, and experts in taking research into development). To guarantee complete trust and transparency, data is processed through open, objective frameworks (Living Laboratory Cycle). 

 

By keeping both the processing methods and the insights open, synthesis becomes a collective review process ensuring the final outcomes authentically represent the voice of Auroville

• Who will be interested in this data?

 

Inside Auroville, it could allow the community itself to cultivate a clearer self-awareness, offering an objective look into our collective reality, shared challenges, and evolving aspirations and development planning.

 

Beyond Auroville, the wider world has a keen interest in gaining insight into this unique human experiment. As a universal living experiment in human unity, the findings offer valuable research data, lessons, and models for thinkers, researchers, and organisations globally who are looking to understand complex social and human transformation.
